When a botched bank robbery upends Harmon Rutledge’s plan to fix his crumbling marriage, salvation comes from an unlikely hero: Ethel Goodman, a recently widowed school teacher turned real estate agent. To repay her bravery, Harmon hires Ethel to sell his house—only for her to discover his wife is missing.

Ethel’s gut says something’s wrong, but the promise of a fat commission keeps her on the job. Meanwhile, Harmon recruits the bungling robbers—one of them Ethel’s estranged stepson—for a new, far more sinister plan.

As the truth unravels, Ethel teams up with a rookie reporter and the missing wife’s secret lover to uncover what really happened. But the closer they get, the more dangerous Harmon becomes—and Ethel must decide how far she’ll go to make sure no one gets away with murder.
